Neuer Zollhof – Düsseldorf Germany
Frank O. Gehry’s ensemble of buildings still playfully dominates Düsseldorf’s cityscape and the Media Harbor.
As early as 1999, the Neue Zollhof was completed as a triptych of three different structures. The sculptural design language and choice of materials are typical of the American architect. White plaster and stainless steel meet red clinker.
Although the Iranian architect Zaha Hadid won the competition in 1990, her design was not implemented. Instead, a few years later, the Neue Zollhof was built according to designs by architects Frank O. Gehry, Beucker, Maschlanka and Partner.
Since I hold both architects in high esteem, it would have been quite exciting for me to see their completed designs standing side by side.
